Why The Poetry Theatre? Because even the most abstract work is meant to be performed!
The Poetry Theatre has three strands.
S.V.’s own work is presented as theatre - whether a sequence of geometric poems with geometric props, sets on a theme like ‘The Maze of Love’, or the bizarre sequences that comprize ‘The Books of...’ Series with mime, or deep satire. For details / samples of original work, click on the menu to the right.
The second is to perform ancient work that was only ever oral, and that people have either forgotten or never known of. Check out ‘Widsith’ from the menu on the right.
The third is to rescue classic and sometimes neglected poetry and perform it as theatre, often mixed with S.V.’s own work, on themes like ‘The Secret Garden’ or ‘Of the Sea’, restoring wonderful pieces from Ben Jonson to John Masefield, from Sappho to Han Shan and bringing out the theatre, power, beauty or comedy in them. The Shows can also be done as collaborations with other artists in the Collective - with larger sets, sculptures, video projections, Moroccan Pavilion, commissioned soundtracks, etc..
