About the Commission
The community was very much at the heart of this commission from its inception. The over all design emerged through a sequence of meetings held between Melina Hubbard, the local council, the main service users and the wider community, which were held throughout the summer of 2009. The aim being to renovate a bit of apparent waste land, and open it out for general use, without compromising the landscape’s existing features.
Building commenced in November 2009, and lasted throughout the winter, with Living Willow being used throughout, more dens were added by local children as they inhabited the space in the spring and summer 2010.
The design will gradually grow into being very much at the heart of the wood, creating new textures and with that ways to explore an existing landscape, that might otherwise have been thought of as merely ‘a bit of scrub’ land.
Children (and also Adults) are then invited to look at existing scrub land from the animal’s point of view- from within the now living willow wood.
