This van conversion was like no other for two reasons.
Firstly the conversion was for a very large van, which need to be kitted out for a couple to live in. They wanted the conversion to include not only cooker, sink, ladder, solar powered electrics (lights etc) , but also a harmonium key board as well! Moreover the living space had to include both space to hang a canoe in it, but also still have room enough to transport large and heavy drums. In short, the van was big, but their plans where (potentially) even bigger, and the design had allow for that fact.
Secondly the conversion was carried out in a unique situation. It was part of the Sunrise Offgrid Celebration (21-23 Aug 2009). As such there was a very tight schedule for the conversion: it simply had to be finished in three days (a time scale that included the need to run workshops in converting vans). Moreover it was a stipulation of the festival that all the power used for the conversion had to be ‘off grid’ (solar) power, and that all the materials used were recycled wood. The aim was to proof that converting a van could done not just ‘cheaply’ but with also with minimum effect to the environment
